Expired WoF or rego: Auckland vehicle transport
Check WoF, rego and registration separately before moving an Auckland car. Understand limited inspection trips and when to arrange vehicle transport.
Arrange vehicle transport if your car cannot safely and legally make the planned trip. An expired WoF or rego needs a closer check: New Zealand has limited exceptions for inspection or repair journeys, with safety and purpose conditions. First establish which record has expired, whether the vehicle is safe, and where it needs to go.
This guide covers ordinary cars already registered in New Zealand. If registration has been cancelled, use the separate entry-certifier transport guide.
Check three separate records
- WoF: the warrant of fitness is a regular safety inspection. A current label does not remove the need to keep the car safe between inspections.
- Vehicle licence, commonly called rego: this is the recurring licence for using the vehicle on the road. NZTA explains that ordinary licence renewal requires a current WoF or CoF.
- Registration: this is the vehicle’s entry on the Motor Vehicle Register. Confirm whether it remains registered, particularly if it has been off the road for a long time.
The NZTA vehicle licensing page explains the distinction and the renewal options. “No rego” in a sale listing can be unclear. Ask whether the licence has expired or registration has actually been cancelled before arranging collection.
When an inspection or repair trip may be allowed
According to NZTA’s WoF guidance, a vehicle without a valid WoF can only be driven for repair or a new WoF if it is safe to do so. A booking alone does not establish that the vehicle is safe.
For a vehicle that is still registered but has no current licence, NZTA Factsheet 27 describes a limited exception: travel must be directly to an appropriate place for a WoF, CoF, servicing or repairs, solely for that purpose. The vehicle must still be safe on the road. Where both WoF and licence have expired, both sets of conditions matter.
These conditions do not authorise ordinary errands or general use. If you cannot establish that your proposed trip qualifies, check with NZTA before driving or arrange transport. Do not test a car in traffic to find out whether it is safe.
Match the next step to the problem
| What you have established | Next step |
|---|---|
| Only the vehicle licence has expired; WoF is current and registration remains active | Check NZTA’s renewal process before planning any road use. You may be able to renew without moving the car. |
| WoF has expired, or the vehicle failed its inspection | Read the inspection findings and confirm the repair or inspection destination. Assess the limited trip conditions above before driving. |
| Safety is uncertain, or the vehicle cannot move safely | Tell the transport operator what is known and what is uncertain. Arrange an assessment of the transport job. |
| The planned trip is a collection, relocation or other journey outside the stated inspection/repair purpose | Do not rely on the inspection exception. Resolve the road-use requirements or book vehicle transport. |
| Registration has been cancelled | Contact an entry certifier about re-registration and delivery before booking the move. |
Send the status, not just “no WoF”
A useful enquiry separates paperwork from condition. For example: “The WoF has expired, the vehicle licence has expired, and NZTA confirms the car is still registered. It is parked at home. I need it delivered to a booked repair appointment.” Add any known faults without guessing a diagnosis.
Include the make, model and year, pickup address, destination, appointment time and any known access restriction. If you have a failed-inspection sheet, describe the relevant findings. Say whether keys are available and whether rolling, steering or selecting neutral is known to be possible. Leave untested details as “unknown”.
