Labour Weekend from Auckland: make a breakdown plan

Plan who to call, where a disabled car can be received and how passengers will continue before your Auckland Labour Weekend trip on 24–26 October 2026.

Before leaving Auckland for Labour Weekend, save your help contacts, confirm a possible receiving location for a disabled car, and make a separate plan for passengers. Check live road information again before travelling. A towing contact alone does not tell you whether a workshop can receive the car over the holiday or how everyone will get home.

Employment New Zealand’s 2026 calendar lists Labour Day as Monday 26 October 2026, making the coming long weekend 24–26 October. This guide is a contingency plan for that trip, rather than a forecast of traffic or a mechanical pre-trip inspection.

Check the route while you still have choices

Use the NZTA Journey Planner to check current incidents, closures and roadworks on your route before departure and before the return journey. Its suggested route is indicative; check the conditions map, and check the relevant council for local-road disruptions. Do not treat a saved route or screenshot as current road information for the whole weekend.

Save the road names, direction of travel and planned stopping places with your trip details. Let a companion know the route and a contact plan. Keep a way to charge your phone available, and keep essential contact numbers somewhere you can access if the phone runs flat. These are preparation suggestions, not a guarantee that reception or help will be available at every point.

Make a help-contact card

Before leaving, write down:

  • Your roadside-assistance or insurer assistance contact, if you have one; ask the provider what applies to your vehicle and trip.
  • A trusted person who can help with passenger arrangements or speak to a receiving workshop.
  • Your repairer’s contact and the person who can authorise receiving a car over the holiday.
  • A towing contact appropriate to the area you are travelling in.

Drive1’s confirmed 24/7 phone and dispatch area is Greater Auckland. Out-of-Auckland vehicle transport is by appointment. If you are stranded elsewhere, contact your assistance provider or an appropriate local operator and confirm the immediate recovery arrangements. A booked regional move should not be treated as a promise of emergency dispatch outside Auckland.

Confirm a destination and a fallback

Ask your preferred workshop or dealer directly about holiday receiving arrangements. Distinguish being open for repairs from being able to accept a tow. Confirm an actual receiving contact, the entrance, space for delivery and whether someone must attend; do not assume a closed gate has a safe drop-off area behind it.

If it cannot receive the car, discuss an alternative before agreeing to a tow. That might be another willing repairer or a suitable home address, depending on the vehicle, access and circumstances. Avoid sending a car to an unattended address simply because it appears on a map. Our home, workshop or dealer destination guide covers the receiving questions in more detail.

Record who will hold the key and who will contact the repairer on its next opening day. Any onward vehicle movement is a separate arrangement to confirm, including its quote and timing. For a prestige or classic vehicle, add the condition and item handover record.

Plan passenger travel separately

Agree what passengers would do if the car cannot continue: who to contact, a possible collection point once everyone is safe, and essential medication, child travel needs or luggage that must stay with them. Confirm suitable passenger transport independently; do not assume a tow truck has seats for your group or provides an onward ride.

If a passenger has accessibility needs, discuss a workable alternative with your chosen assistance or transport provider before the trip. Keep the passenger plan separate from the car’s receiving address so that a change of repairer does not leave everyone without a plan.

If the car stops, put immediate safety first

Drive’s official breakdown guidance advises signalling and moving off the road where possible, switching on hazard lights, and avoiding walking along a motorway. Call 111 when people are injured or in danger, or there is an immediate serious risk, as explained by NZ Police. Follow emergency-service instructions. Do not walk into traffic to take photographs or collect a more precise location.

Once it is safe to make the assistance call, describe the road, direction, nearest exit or landmark, whether the car is off the traffic lane, and the people and vehicle involved. Explain what changed or appeared on the dashboard without diagnosing the fault. The Auckland motorway location guide gives a fuller location checklist; read it before departure.

Keep a short fallback note

A practical note can read: “Route and direction; assistance contact; passenger contact; preferred receiving address and confirmed contact; fallback address; key holder; vehicle model and known restrictions.” Recheck it if the route, workshop or vehicle changes. It is a starting point for the conversation, not an instruction to move the car regardless of conditions.

For immediate towing in Greater Auckland, call Drive1 on 021 0289 7845. For an agreed future move, review our vehicle transport service and send the pickup, destination, model, condition and time window through the quote form. Confirm suitability, price and receiving arrangements for the actual job.
